COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Community icon and longtime media professional Mike Wright has been named Director of Public Relations and Strategic Communications for Texas A&M Athletics, Director of Athletics Scott Woodward announced.

“Few people can match Mike’s wealth of experience in public relations and communications, as well as his knowledge of Texas A&M University and the surrounding community,” Woodward said. “I’ve gotten to know Mike well over the past few years, and I know he is the right person to fill this important role. He is an invaluable addition to our leadership team.”

The accomplished Wright is well-known to fans of Texas A&M Athletics, having served as the public address announcer at Kyle Field for the past two seasons and as a play-by-play announcer on both radio and television broadcasts for Texas A&M women’s basketball, including the 2011 National Championship game.

“It is an honor to expand my involvement with Texas A&M and the Home of the 12th Man, and is especially humbling to share responsibility to grow the iconic brand of one of the nation’s leading Universities through its Athletic Department,” Wright said.

In his new role with athletics, Wright will provide strategic communications counsel for the director of athletics and senior staff, while also directing the communications and brand oversight of the department of athletics. He will also work closely with Texas A&M University and System administration to advance university priorities and increase brand awareness.

“I’ve enjoyed a working relationship with many on the communications team and will learn from them during this time of transition, working collaboratively to capitalize on this incredibly exciting time in Texas A&M Athletics,” Wright added.

“Texas A&M has unique stories to tell. Recognized as a leader in education and research, teams that contend for conference and national titles and impressive facilities serve as catalysts for an unparalleled reputation as a truly world-class university. Being part of Texas A&M Athletics allows me to play a small role in expanding our dedication to Building Champions.”

Wright has nearly 30 years of broadcast and executive leadership experience, as well as a wide array of community involvement.

He was the Vice-President and General Manager of KBTX-TV in Bryan and College Station from 2003-2018 and in the same capacity at KWTX-TV in Waco, Temple and Killeen from 2014-2018. An accomplished journalist, Wright was named the Texas Broadcaster of the Year by the Texas Association of Broadcasters in 2013.

Wright developed KBTX’s “Aggie Game Day,” a one-hour pre-game show live prior to each Texas A&M football game in 2004, the first locally produced sports show to be carried regionally and nationwide on a network (Fox Sports). He developed a similar show for KWTX in 2014.

The versatile Wright has been a fixture on the radio broadcasts for the A&M Consolidated High School football team since 1992. A sought-after public speaker, Wright has served as the emcee, featured speaker or moderator at a variety of community functions, including the 9/11 Anniversary Program at the George Bush Presidential Library, the Big Brother Big Sister Annual Fundraiser and the MSC Opera and Performing Arts Society Gala among many others.

Wright earned his bachelor’s degree in telecommunications from Baylor and an associate’s degree from Blinn College. He and his wife, Bethany, Aggie Class of ’93, are the proud parents of twins Macy and Mason.
