Aggie Baseball announces team award winners

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M Baseball announced their annual list of team honors Wednesday after the Aggies concluded the 2019 campaign with a 39-23-1 record, extending their school-record string of consecutive NCAA Championship appearances to 13 seasons.

MARION PUGH MOST VALUABLE PLAYER – Braden Shewmake
Junior Braden Shewmake earned the Marion Pugh Most Valuable Player Award. He was the only Aggie to start all 63 games. On the year, he batted .313 with 45 runs, 78 hits, 14 doubles, four triples, six home runs, 47 RBI and nine stolen bases. Shewmake logged a .474 slugging percentage and .374 on-base percentage. He led the Aggies in batting average, hits, doubles, triples, RBI and slugging percentage.

In SEC play, Shewmake batted .289 with 21 runs, six doubles, two triples, four home runs and 20 RBI.

Shewmake became the Aggies’ first first-round pick in the MLB Draft since 2012. The Atlanta Braves selected Shewmake with the 21st overall pick.

C.E. "PAT" OLSEN OUTSTANDING PITCHER AWARD – John Doxakis
Junior John Doxakis was one of the nation’s top pitchers and was selected by his teammates to receive the C.E. "Pat" Olsen Outstanding Pitcher Award.

Doxakis posted a 7-4 record with a 2.06 ERA, .207 opponent batting average and 115 strikeouts in 104.2 innings. The southpaw was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pitcher of the Month for February. He also made the All-Tournament Team at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic and the SEC Tournament.

The Tampa Bay Rays chose Doxakis in the second round of the MLB Draft.

WALLY MOON AWARD – Kasey Kalich
The Wally Moon Award is given annually to the player who shows the most improvement from the fall to the end of the season. This year, his teammates picked Kasey Kalich as the recipient of the honor.

A transfer from Blinn College who produced pedestrian numbers as a starting pitcher in 2018, Kalich emerged into one of the best relief pitchers in the nation. Kalich posted a 3-1 record with 12 saves, a 3.18 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 34.0 innings.

The Atlanta Braves picked Kalich in the fourth round of the MLB Draft.

MARION PUGH SPIRIT AWARD – Jonathan Ducoff
An inspiration for the 2019 Aggies, senior Jonathan Ducoff was recognized for his contributions by his teammates, awarding him the Marion Pugh Spirit Award, which is given annually to the player who is most instrumental to team unity and who provides valuable leadership both on and off the field. The winner of the Texas A&M Athletics Department Lohman Inspiration Award for his battle with follicular lymphoma.

The Kingwood, Texas, product played in 39 games, including 30 starts. He batted .229 with 20 runs, six doubles, three home runs and 27 RBI.

Ducoff accounted for two of the Aggies’ three walk-off hits in 2019, including a victory against No. 2 Vanderbilt and a win in the SEC Tournament against Florida.

LORAINE B. AND WILLIAM B. "BREEZY" BREAZEALE RBI AWARD – Braden Shewmake
For the third consecutive season, Shewmake was the Aggies' best run-producer, earning the Loraine B. and William B. "Breezy" Breazeale RBI Award. The Wylie, Texas, native drove in 47 runs, bringing his career tally to 161, seventh in Texas A&M annals.
