Aggie indoor campaign opens with Reveille Invitational on Saturday

COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M track and field opens its indoor season with the Reveille Invitational on Saturday as the Aggies host Houston, TCU and Texas in a meet that will begin at 3 p.m. and finish around 5:30 p.m. inside Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.

The Reveille Invitational will include five field events – high jump, pole vault, long jump, shot put and weight throw – along with seven track events – 60m, 60m hurdles, 200m, 1000m, mile, 3,000m and 4x400 relay.

“This meet is always a culmination of fall training to see where we are,” said Texas A&M head coach Pat Henry, now in his 15th season with the Aggie program. “It’s early, and we know it’s early. We run a limited schedule with limited events by design.”

This will be the 11th season for the Aggies to host indoor meets in Gilliam. Meanwhile, with the near completion of E.B. Cushing Stadium, Texas A&M will host a set of outdoor meets on campus for the first time since 2004. An online construction cam is available to display the progress of the outdoor venue (http://athstream.athletics.tamu.edu/track.html).

“The things we’ve been able to do by adding the indoor facility have helped this program tremendously,” noted Henry. “Without the indoor program we would have been way behind. We are about having a team and the indoor facility helps us have a team. We’re not about having two or three disciplines, we want to have every discipline. We want to have someone in every event.”

All four men’s teams competing in the Reveille Invitational produced a top 20 team finish at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championships that were held at Gilliam. The Aggies placed fifth with Houston seventh while Texas finished 12th and TCU tied for 17th. Texas A&M women, who tied for 10th place, were the lone team among the four to finish among top 20 indoors last season.

Texas A&M returns a pair of individual NCAA outdoor champions this season in Sammy Watson (800m) and Tahar Triki (triple jump). They are two of the 18 returning All-Americans the Aggies will feature in 2019. Joining the fray this season is a men’s recruiting class that ranked second best by Track & Field News in its 2018 November issue.

“We have a group that is excited to be involved in this competition,” said Henry. “They’ll line up and do everything they can to be successful.”
