COLLEGE STATION – Three Texas A&M athletes were honored with SEC Athlete of the Week accolades following their performances during the 92nd Texas Relays this past weekend. Decathlon winner Nathan Hite shared the men’s Field Athlete of the Week while Tyra Gittens shared the women’s Field Athlete of the Week and Nick Mirabelli earned the men’s Freshman of the Week.
Hite established the world-leading score for 2019 in the decathlon with a career best of 7,774 points, moving him to No. 3 performer on the Aggie all-time list. Hite entered the final event of the decathlon, the 1,500m, trailing Gabe Moore of Arkansas by five points. A career best time of 4:43.87 placed Hite second in the race and enabled him to win the overall competition by 113 points. Hite, who trailed Moore by 105 points after day one, became just the second A&M athlete to win the decathlon at the Texas Relays.
In the process of scoring 3,709 points on the first day of the Texas Relays heptathlon, Gittens scored 1,067 points in the high jump with a collegiate-leading clearance of 6-1 ½ (1.87), which is a career best and currently equal to No. 4 on the 2019 outdoor world list. After clearing three previous heights on second attempts at 5-10 (1.78), 5-11 ½ (1.81), and 6-0 ½ (1.84), Gittens made the career best height of 6-1 ½ on her first attempt. She is now equal No. 2 performer and equal No. 3 performance on the Aggie all-time list.
Already an SEC Field Athlete of the Week this outdoor season, Mirabelli earned freshman honors with a career best javelin throw of 236-6 (72.09) at the Texas Relays as he placed fifth overall and third among collegians. Mirabelli has the top mark in the nation by a freshman and ranks fifth overall among collegians this season. He remains No. 10 on the Aggie all-time list. Among juniors (U20) this season, Mirabelli is second on the U.S. list and eighth on the world junior list.
The Aggies open their brand new track and field facility at E.B. Cushing Stadium this Saturday, April 6, with The Reveille meet featuring eight schools. It has been 15 years since Texas A&M has hosted an outdoor track and field meet on campus.
