BRYAN, Tex. - The Bombers are happy to announce the addition of two San Antonio-area pitchers to the 2019 summer roster:
Zach DeLeon of Hondo, TX and Tyler Flores of San Antonio, TX.
DeLeon is a right-handed sophomore at San Jacinto College - North. DeLeon has committed to play for University of Texas at San Antonio in 2020. In 2018, DeLeon was credited with 20 strikeouts and 13 allowed hits in 15.2 innings pitched. DeLeon recorded a single save for the 2018 season. DeLeon struck out a season-best five batters and allowed no hits in three innings against Grayson College in early April. DeLeon has a fastball that can break into the lower 90s.
DeLeon’s side-arm delivery adds an extra element to the pitching unit in the Brazos Valley.
“Zach’s going to be a big part of our bullpen this summer coming from San Jac [with] a lot of experience,” says Head Coach
Brian Nelson. “[He] throws from an unconventional arm slot, headed to UTSA. We’re counting on big things from Zach.”
Flores, a lefty, started 10 games for the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas in his sophomore season with the team. In 2018, Flores was awarded Freshman of the Year as well as an All-Conference Second Team distinction by the Lone Star Conference. As a freshman, Flores
delivered when it mattered, striking out a career-high 12 batters against West Texas A&M in an NCAA South Central Regional game. In TAMU-Kingsville’s first College World Series win in 2018, Flores pitched six innings and retired eight batters as the pitcher of record.
“We’re excited to get Tyler Flores,” says Nelson. “He’s going to come in and make a significant impact on our starting rotation, especially early. We’re excited to get some quality innings out of a guy like Tyler.”
