Bombers add two versatile arms to 2019 Roster

BRYAN, Texas -- The Brazos Valley Bombers are adding two more arms to the pitching depth chart. Dontae Woodard, a left-handed pitcher from Texas State
University, and Henry Bird, a right-handed pitcher committed to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, will play for the Bombers this year.

Woodard shined in his career at Elgin High School before attending Texas State. As a senior at Elgin HS, Woodard recorded 75 strikeouts and was selected to the 2018 All-District 19-5A First Team. Woodard’s high school career demonstrates his versatility, as he was selected to the 2017 All-District 19-5A First Team as a first baseman. Woodard earned All-District 17-5A Second Team honors as a pitcher in 2016. As a freshman at Texas State in 2019, Woodard pitched ten innings, notching seven strikeouts and allowing five hits. Woodard led the Bobcats’ pitching rotation in opposing batting average (.143) and ERA (2.53).

The Bombers pitching staff is looking forward to having Woodard’s arm in the mix this summer.

“Dontae’s going to be a big, key force this summer in the pursuit of a TCL championship,” says Pitching Coach James Dillard.

“The thing about Dontae is that everything he throws has movement. He’s going to be big, a big asset, key force coming out of the bullpen this summer. We’re excited about what Dontae brings to the Bombers, and we’re looking forward to a great summer from him.”

Bird
saw limited action with the Blinn Buccaneers in 2018 as a freshman but saw an expanded role in his sophomore season. This season, Bird started six games and recorded three wins for the Buccaneers. Bird struck out five batters and allowed a single hit in three
innings against Ranger College in mid-February. Like Woodard, Bird also saw success as an infielder during his high school career. As a senior at Alvin High School, Bird was named to the All-District 24-6A First Team as a third baseman.

Bird’s
proven talent will make him a valuable addition to the roster.

“He’s
also going to be a bullpen arm for us,” says Dillard. “His numbers don’t tell the whole story. Everything he does on and off the field has been really good. He’s going to be a good presence for us coming out of the bullpen. ... He’s going to get some key outs
for us this summer. We’re excited about having Henry with us.
