Classroom Champion Mikayla Merkel

News 3 Sports would like to congratulate our latest Classroom Champion, Mikayla Merkel. The Normangee High School Senior has a 4.1 GPA, and is currently ranked in the top 10 percent of her class.

“Mikayla is intrinsically motivated. When you see people that are out there and their really loud and boisterous; that's not going to be Mikayla but she's a person who's very contentious because she takes care of business. She does her own work. She'll study on her own time. She works hard to improve or get better. I think because of that, other people follow her by example.”- Renita Schroeder, Teacher

Mikayla plays volleyball and softball for the Lady Panthers...Last season her and her teammates made it to state, and finished as State Runner-Ups. Mikayla has been a All-District selection and an All-State Tournament Team selection in Softball for her play on the diamond. Outside of sports, Mikayla is involved in Future Farmers of America, UIL, and she is a member of the National Honor Society. In FFA and UIL, Mikayla has been a State Qualifier and received the FFA Lone Star degree. In her spare time, Mikayla enjoys playing sports, showing her livestock animals, and spending time with her family.

“She's more of a silent leader. You know everything she does is hard as she can go. She's always where she's supposed to be. Doesn't have to be told to do things. Just naturally takes over a drill or whatever we're doing but doesn't really have to say much to lead the way she does. Everything I've seen her do is full tilt. I mean she's going to do it the best she can.”- Charles Hudgeons, Coach.

“My parents have always taught me to be hard working and always do my best in everything that I do. It kind of comes second nature to me to always do my best in whether it be in sports or academics. It's just something that comes easy to me. I think I lead by example through my players by showing them the hardworking skills and the self confidence they need to become a better athlete and better themselves.” says Merkel.

After High School, Mikayla is currently undecided on what college or university she will attend but, wherever she chooses to go she will major in Animal Science, in hopes to one day become a Veterinarian.

Congratulations to Mikayla Merkel of Normangee High School. This week’s News 3 Sports Classroom Champion!
