FRISCO – Sam Houston State freshman Diego Davila has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week, per a release from league officials on Tuesday afternoon.
He is the third Bearkat to win a weekly honor from the SLC this season and the honor comes after his biggest week as a Bearkat, helping Sam Houston to four road victories last week in the city of Houston.
The freshman from Klein Collins HS reached base safely in nine of his 16 plate appearances for the week, delivering four extra-base hits in that span as well. He had a pair of hits and two RBI on Tuesday in a 10-9 win at Rice, with no at-bat bigger than his bases-loaded RBI walk he drew with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 9-9 tie and bring in the game-winning run over the Owls.
He had an RBI double and scored a run in Friday’s series opener against HBU, then went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a double in a 17-5 win over the Huskies on Saturday.
Davila saved his biggest game for Sunday, a day that started with his first career home run, a three-run shot in the second inning that put SHSU ahead 3-1. He also added another double later in the game and finished with a .923 slugging percentage for the week.
For the season Davila is hitting .333 with a .515 slugging percentage after his big week.
He and the rest of the Kats are scheduled to open up a two-game midweek set at Louisiana Tech on Tuesday night before returning home for three Southland Conference games against UIW at Don Sanders Stadium beginning on Friday night.
