Davis named SLC, STATS FCS player of the week

FRISCO – Sam Houston Bearkat wide receiver Davion Davis pulled in a pair of weekly honors after a breakout game on special teams last week against Lamar.

For the second straight week Davis earned an honor from the Southland when he was named the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week in a release by league officials on Monday afternoon. Just hours later STATS FCS named him the National Special Teams Player of the Week.

The junior from Hutto was the SLC Offensive Player of the Week last week after hauling in four touchdown catches against Northwestern State and did not have a punt return in his Bearkat career until Saturday, but looked like a natural in the role against Lamar.

He finished with 185 all-purpose yards and 61 yards in the receiving game, but made the game’s biggest impact on punt return with two big plays late in the first half. After Lamar had pulled to within 33-20, Davis weaved through the Lamar punt coverage off a bouncing punt for a 46-yard touchdown with just 1:43 left in the half to put the Kats up 40-20.

It was the first punt return for a score for the Kats since 2015.

Then, after a SHSU defensive stop on the ensuing drive, the Cardinals punted it away again and Davis took it 54-yards up the middle to the Lamar 20-yard line. Sam Houston then scored again on the next play with just 21 seconds to go in the half, taking a 47-20 lead into the break.

Davis currently ranks second in the league with 98.9 receiving yards per game and with 135.7 all-purpose yards, trailing only teammate Nathan Stewart in both categories. His 10 total TDs ranks third in the nation, while his nine receiving scores places him only behind Western Illinois’ Jaelon Acklin.

Sam Houston has now won six weekly honors from the Southland Conference this year with Davis' most recent nod. He and fellow wide receiver Jaylen Harris have each claimed SLC Special Teams Player of the Week with Harris taking it after a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Week 2 at Prairie View.

The Bearkats will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Southeastern Louisiana for a meeting with the Lions at Strawberry Stadium on ESPN3.
