Former Hearne basketball player looks back on state game 30 years ago

HEARNE, Tex. (KBTX) - In three days, the Hearne Eagle boy's basketball team will be in San Antonio to play in a state semi final game for the first in 30 years.

The win is bringing back some memories for members of the 1989 team.

"It's just a good feeling to get to go and be one of the top teams in the state and be playing this time of year," said Fondell Adams, a member of the 1989 Hearne basketball team.

Adams was a junior then. His game winning shot against Navasota in the regional championship is what set the Eagles up for a match up with San Antonio Cole and Shaquille O'Neal.

"We just knew him as Shaquille O'Neal, seven foot giant," said Adams.

Adams didn't think it would take 30 years for another team to be in this position, but says this year's team and his 1989 team have some similarities.

"They play the same style we played back in the day," said Adams.

The team is not only stirring up memories, but community support as well.

"It's a good feeling that everyone can come together as one to support a group of young me like them," said Adams.

Adams offered some advice for the team.

"Just go in there and focus and take care of business like you've been doing all year long."
