BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) -- The third time was not the charm for the Hearne Eagle basketball team as they lost to Shelbyville 83-51 Friday morning in the Class 2A State Semifinal game at the Alamodome.
Previously in 1969 and 1989 the Hearne boys' basketball program has advanced to the UIL State Tournament and gotten beaten in the semifinals and unfortunately their luck was no different in 2019.
Hearne trailed 23-10 after the 1st quarter, and could never make a run as the top ranked Dragons (38-3), led by Jay Buckley's game high 28 points, advance to Saturday's 2A state championship game where they will battle Gruver at 1:30 p.m. for the title.
The Eagles were led in scoring by Damion Dunn who had 17 points. Javareyon Bailey added 15. Hearne ends its best season since the 1989 team lost to San Antonio Cole in the state semifinals with an over overall record of 25-4.
