BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) -- The Rangers hope to carry late season momentum from a year ago into 2018 as they look to contend for a playoff spot. Head coach Greg Morgan said, “We expect to turn the corner in our second year and in a new district.”
Rudder will compete in 10-5A D2 this season, where Consol, Huntsville, and Montgomery are the preseason favorites. “We need to improve everywhere, but will have better team chemistry this season,” said Morgan.
The Rangers return experienced players at many positions, but the strength could be in the trenches with five returnees on both the offensive and defensive lines. Casey Shutt returns at linebacker after a first-team all-district 2017 campaign and will be key to the Rudder defense.
The offense turns to Felix Conde at quarterback. He will have an experienced line blocking for him and a trio of returning receivers in Markeist Johnson, Malcom Manley and Trenithe Campbell.
Rudder opens with a pair of road games at Bastrop and Elgin before the home opener and non-district finale against Navasota. Morgan said, “I’m looking forward to the first game with Bastrop to see if we have improved.” On paper, there are some winnable games on the district schedule and the Rangers should be in the playoff mix as the season winds down.
