Kats positioned to clinch SLC crown

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State Bearkats have made it to the final weekend of the 2019 season with a chance to secure another Southland Conference title in its own hands when it hosts Northwestern State for three games beginning Thursday at Don Sanders Stadium.

Coach Matt Deggs’ crew enters the final weekend of SLC play with a slim one-game lead over the trio of Central Arkansas, Southeastern Louisiana and Incarnate Word and can clinch the program’s seventh all-time title and third in the last four years with two wins over the Demons.

Each game of the weekend can be followed via live stats or by following @BearkatsBSB on Twitter. The games will also be streamed on the Bearkat Sports Network YouTube channel.

A sweep of the Demons would claim the outright title and the No. 1 seed in next week’s Southland Conference Tournament; however, just one loss would bring in a number of other seeding scenarios, none of which would drop the Kats below the No. 3 seed in the tournament.

Another caveat to the weekend will come on Saturday when the Bearkats honor 12 seniors prior to the group’s final home game of their careers.

SHSU is coming off a key series win at SLU last weekend, sweeping a doubleheader from the Lions to leave Hammond with a one-game lead over the Lions and the rest of the field going into this weekend.

The Demons, meanwhile, are in a fight to earn a right to defend a title of their own. Northwestern State walked away from Sugar Land with the Southland Conference Tournament title one year ago, but at 14-13 are in a group of six teams separated by just two games who are fighting for the four remaining spots in next week’s tournament.

They have lost four of their last six league games after taking two of three from McNeese in mid-April, but the Demons need just one win to make it into the eight-team field in Sugar Land.
