HUNTSVILLE – A dominant pitching performance from senior Lindsey McLeod and an explosive offense led the Sam Houston State to a 7-2 win in its home opener versus Texas Southern on Wednesday night at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
McLeod set the tone of the game early for the Kats (2-3), striking out the first three batters in the TSU (0-1) lineup and carried on from there. She tossed a total of 4.2 innings – with 12 strikeouts, three hits and allowed just two earned runs. Those two runs came from a two-run shot in the top of the fifth from TSU’s catcher Marissa Padron after the Kats already held a 6-0 lead.
Junior pitcher Karina Sanchez would finish the rest of the game going unscathed behind a solid Kats defense, allowing just two hits in 2.1 frames of relief.
Offensively the Kats wasted no time getting on the board, striking for a pair in the first and breaking the game open with four in the third.
Shortstop Tiffany Thompson was able to get kickstart things in the first with a walk ahead of second baseman Brooke Malia who followed by crushing a two-run dinger over the left field wall - her second homer of the young season - to give the Kats a 2-0 lead. Malia added another RBI to her total in the fourth on an RBI ground out, while Thompson and Kyndal Kutac also added RBI to up the lead to 6-0.
Kutac was not done, however, and finished 2-for-3 on the night, getting bettering her fourth-inning RBI single in the fourth by capping the scoring with a towering solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the fifth to give the Kats a little more room to breathe. Karlee Canada also went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, while the top five hitters in the Bearkat order scored six of the seven total runs.
The Kats head to Baylor to take part in the Getterman Classic in Waco. They will face UT Arlington at 10 am on Friday in the tournament opener.
