COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The College Station Lady Cougar soccer team defeated the Rudder Rangers 8-2 Thursday evening at Cougar Field. The Cougs honored their 6 seniors, Lauren Barrett, Sophie Bullard, Haley Daniel, Morgan Green, Kate Hinckley, and Haley Wilton along with their parents before the final home game of the season.
The victory improves the Cougars to 10-0 in district and 17-1-2 overall. The Cougs opened the scoring 8 minutes into the match when Callie Woods' cross found Olivia Riechman,who beat the goalie with a high shot to put the Cougs up 1-0.
The Cougs struck again a few seconds later when Hailey Daniel scored on an assist from Riechman. At the 20:18 mark of the first half, Kate Hinckley beat 2 defenders before firing a low shot just out of the reach of the Ranger goalie to put the Cougs up 3-0.
A few minutes later, Daniel's shot rebounded off the goalie and Riechman put in the rebound for a 4-0 lead. In a span of 5 minutes Rudder scored two goals to cut the Cougar lead to 4-2.
An own goal by Rudder made the half-time score 5-2. At the 39:33 mark on the second-half, Riechman's long pass found Daniel alone behind the Ranger backline, Daniel's goal made the score 6-2. Daniel almost scored again, but the shot rebounded off the Ranger goalie, Carley Deuel put in the rebound to put the Cougs up 7-2.
The final goal was scored off a header by Daniel, with Deuel picking up the assist off of a corner.
In JV action the Lady Cougars were victorious by a score of 8-0. Olivia Fox was the leading scorer for the night with three goals. Two goals were scored off of rebounds and one was a shot in the upper corner. Macy Nugent had two goals. Both were in the second half also off of rebounds from shots on goal. Caitlyn Bachman, Christina Choi, and Karisa Winklemann each had one goal on the evening. Lauren Hanik assisted on one goal during the match. Next up for the Cougs will be Tuesday, March 20, in Waco against the Lions.
