GALVESTON, Texas — Henry Bird pitched six solid innings in his second start for the Buccaneers before Jake Miller hit a walk-off three-run homer for Blinn College baseball to run-rule Galveston College, 9-1, in eight innings on Monday afternoon.
With the win, Blinn improves to 20-14 overall and 13-10 in Region XIV play, while claiming a four-game series sweep over the Whitecaps.
“Winning four in a series takes a great deal of effort physically and mentally, and they did it,” said Harvey McIntyre, Blinn head coach. “It started on the mound with Henry Bird’s performance for six innings and we had some big swings to put some crooked numbers on the scoreboard and separate ourselves.”
Bird allowed just one run and six hits in what started as a tight game. John Chomko also pitched in on the mound, delivering two scoreless innings and surrendering only one hit.
On the offensive side, Miller and Gray Rodgers led Blinn with three RBIs and two runs each. Cameron Gibbons also scored two runs in the win.
Blinn jumped to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning as Alec Sanchez started things off with a leadoff home run, while Gibbons scored on an error and Rodgers scored on Blake Faecher’s sacrifice fly.
Galveston arrived on the board with its only run in the third inning to cut Blinn’s lead down to 3-2.
After three scoreless innings, Blinn added another three runs in the seventh inning with one swing of the bat. Rodgers hit a three-run homer for Miller and Gibbons to also score.
Then, Miller’s eighth-inning home run with Nick Wolff and Westley Schields on base allowed the Buccaneers to walk off the field with the series sweep.
Next, Blinn will host conference opponent Alvin Community College in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 11, starting at 3 p.m. at Leroy Dreyer Field.
Blinn has competed in intercollegiate athletics since 1903 and captured 41 NJCAA national championships since 1987. For more information, visit www.buccaneersports.com.
