Mitchell Tennis Center • College Station, TX
The No. 20 Texas A&M men's tennis team hosts Georgia Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT) at the George P Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies enter the matchup atop the league standings at 2-0 in SEC play and 8-3 overall. The Bulldogs are 5-4 this spring and 1-0 against the league.
“This is the first match at the Mitchell Tennis Center since the Virginia match in January and I know our guys are super excited to play in front of the 12th Man,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “We have a tremendous respect for Georgia, they have a great program and we really look forward to competing against them every year.”
The Maroon & White return to action after capturing a thrilling last-match standing showdown at No. 20 Alabama Sunday, as sophomore Hady Habib captured a third-set tiebreaker to propel the Aggies to a 4-3 upset over the Crimson Tide. Facing triple match point on his serve Habib reeled off an ace followed by a pair of service winners to force the tiebreaker and the Houston native never looked back with a convincing 7-2 result in the tiebreaker to secure the win. After capturing the doubles point junior Valentin Vacherot tacked on the second point followed by sophomore Barnaby Smith’s victory to set the stage for Habib’s heroics.
Texas A&M boasts four student-athletes in this week’s Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Top 125 National Singles Rankings. Junior Valentin Vacherot moved up nine spots to No. 38 this week to lead the charge for the Maroon & White. Joining Vacherot in the Top 125 are No. 58 Smith, No. 120 Habib and No. 121 Austin Abbrat.
Smith is a perfect 8-0 this spring and is riding a nine-match win streak. Habib is in the midst of a five-match win streak and currently stands at 2-0 in SEC action. Abbrat, a freshman from Spring, Texas, has won seven of his last nine matches.
The Aggies look to even the all-time series against Georgia on Thursday as the Bulldogs own a 6-5 advantage in 11 matchups between the two SEC powerhouse programs. The Maroon & White swept last season’s matchups, winning in Athens for the first time, 4-1, before claiming a 4-0 victory in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals.
Thursday’s match kicks off a stretch of five matches in five days at the Mitchell Tennis Center for the Aggies. After taking on the Bulldogs, A&M will host a doubleheader against No. 25 Tennessee and Incarnate Word on Saturday before taking on No. 1 Ohio State and Prairie View A&M on Monday.
