COLLEGE STATION – The No. 8 Texas A&M men's tennis team swept Ole Miss, 7-0, Sunday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. The Aggies (20-6, 10-2 SEC) defeated the Rebels (16-11, 5-7 SEC) on Senior Day as Texas A&M tennis honored its lone senior, Kevin Lam, between doubles and singles.
“It was great to wrap up the regular season with a resounding victory and hopefully that gives us some momentum heading into the postseason,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “To win that comfortably at number one and two singles gave us a shot in the arm. Carlos [Aguilar] and Hady [Habib] played at a really high level today and that was great to see. It’s very difficult to finish undefeated in the SEC and Val [Vacherot] was able to do that, he is playing with a lot of confidence. In that third-set tiebreaker he was down 3-6 and was talking to himself, then he showed the resilience to come back and win.”
The Aggies opened the match earning the doubles point with wins from courts one and three. The Rebels claimed the first doubles match to finish on court two, 6-4, by No. 47 Tim Sandkaulen and Filip Kraljevic over A&M’s Hady Habib and Lam.
A&M’s Valentin Vacherot and Noah Schachter earned a 6-3 win on court three over Ole Miss’ Simon Junk and Cotter Wilson. Vacherot and Schachter improved to 4-1 as a team and 3-1 in SEC matches. The Aggie’s number one duo of Carlos Aguilar and Barnaby Smith, ranked No. 10, clinched the point with a 6-4 victory over No. 31 Finn Reynolds and Fabian Fallert. Aguilar and Smith improved to 11-5 as a team by capturing their fourth ranked win of the spring.
The Aggies claimed four of six first sets in singles action en route to four straight set wins. Aguilar, ranked No. 46, posted the second point of the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ole Miss’ Sandkaulen, ranked No. 60. Aguilar earned his 10th dual victory on court one and his ninth over a ranked foe.
Schachter, an A&M freshman from Wesley Chapel, Florida, earned the third point for the Aggies as he bested Junk 6-1, 6-2 on court five. Schachter leveled his dual match record at 12-12 with the win and improved to 7-5 in the league.
A&M’s Habib, ranked No. 77, clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court two over Ole Miss’ Kraljevic. Habib earned his 14th dual victory of the spring to improve to 8-4 in SEC matches.
Vacherot, ranked No. 61, earned a third-set 10-point tiebreaker victory over Reynolds to improve to 12-0 in the league and match the league lead for victories. Vacherot became the first Aggie to record a 12-0 record in a SEC season and second to record an undefeated season, Jordi Arconada went 10-0 in the 2017 season.
Freshman Austin Abbrat improved the A&M advantage to 6-0 with a 7-5, 6-4 win on court six over Ole Miss’ Wilson. Abbrat recorded his 12th dual match victory and improved to 3-2 in SEC play.
A&M’s Smith completed the sweep with a 6-7(6), 6-0, 1-0 win on court four over Reynolds. With the win, Smith recorded his team-leading 18th dual win and 25th overall victory this year.
A&M and Ole Miss have matched up 14 times on the tennis courts, the Aggies have won 10 matchups in the series.
