Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic concludes at Minute Maid Park

HOUSTON, TX — The 2017 Shriners Hospitals for Children® College Classic concluded tonight at Minute Maid Park with TCU being named the Tournament Champions with a perfect 3-0 record. Texas Tech and Baylor finished 2-1, Texas A&M and LSU went 1-2 and Ole Miss went 0-3. The Big 12 teams topped their SEC opponents over the weekend with a 7-2 record.

Minute Maid Park hosted a total attendance of 53,565 over the weekend, which marks the highest weekend attendance in the 17-year history of the College Classic. The previous record was 48,839, which was set in 2006, in a weekend that also featured Astros FanFest. This weekend saw over 10,000 fans in attendance each day, including strong crowds on Friday (17,215), Saturday (21,843) and Sunday (14,507). Saturday’s crowd marked the largest single-day attendance in the tournament since Feb. 10, 2007, when 23,948 were on hand for the College Classic and the Astros 2007 FanFest.

Additionally, the tournament announced the 2017 Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic All-Tournament Team, which was highlighted by the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player 1B Luken Baker from TCU. Baker hit .455 (5x11) this weekend with one homer, one double, one triple, six runs and three RBI.

Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic Most Outstanding Player: 1B Luken Baker, TCU

Following the conclusion of tonight’s game, the Astros announced the field for the 2018 Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic, which will feature the University of Houston, Sam Houston State and Louisiana-Lafayette and three Southeastern Conference programs in Kentucky, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. The 18th annual tournament will feature nine games at Minute Maid Park from March 2-4, 2018.
