Six Blinn College baseball players earn Region XIV Conference honors

Six Blinn College baseball players earned Region XIV Conference honors after leading the Buccaneers to a second-place finish in the 2019 NJCAA Region XIV Baseball Tournament.

Shortstop Cameron Gibbons (Houston), first baseman Brett Minninch (Colleyville), catcher Preston Hoffart (Magnolia), left-handed pitcher Ryan Day (San Antonio), right-handed pitcher Jackson Leath (Waxahachie) and right-handed pitcher John Chomko (Tomball) were named all-conference.

“We are excited that these guys received all-conference honors because they were all hard workers, great teammates, and represented our program very well,” said Harvey McIntyre, Blinn head coach. “They were all selfless and did whatever it took to make our program better. Every one of them made an impact and are a big part of the reason we were able to withstand and play six games in the regional tournament.”

Gibbons led the Buccaneers and was sixth in the conference in batting average (.343). He also led Blinn with 59 hits while driving in 24 runs. Minninch led Blinn with 34 RBIs and was second on the team with 47 hits, and Hoffart hit .248, racked up 29 hits, and drove in 17 runs.

Day led Blinn and was third in the conference with a 2.05 earned run average, while finishing first on the team and sixth in the conference with 81 strikeouts. He also led the Buccaneers with a 5-4 record. Leath finished the season with a 5-2 record and posted a 2.93 earned run average, while striking out 61, and Chomko also posted a 5-2 record, striking out 56 and finishing with a 2.70 earned run average.

Blinn claimed the No. 2 seed in the Region XIV South Zone Division with a 20-15 conference record.

After falling to Angelina College in the first game of the Region XIV Tournament, the Buccaneers eliminated their next four opponents in Laredo College, Alvin Community College, Angelina, and Panola College before losing to Navarro College in the regional championship game. Blinn finished the season with a 33-22 overall record.
