COLLEGE STATION – Texas A&M Football opens the 2019 season ranked 11th in the first edition of the Amway Coaches Poll, released Thursday by USA Today.
The Aggies closed out Head Coach Jimbo Fisher’s first season ranked No. 16 in the Coaches Poll riding a Southeastern Conference-best four-game winning streak that saw A&M defeat a pair of ranked teams, No. 25 UAB and No. 8 LSU, and earn a dominating 51-23 victory over NC State in the Taxslayer Gator Bowl.
The 2019 poll marks the first time for the Maroon & White to earn a preseason ranking since the 2014 season when they were ranked 20th and the highest preseason ranking since being ranked 6th heading into the 2013 season. Since the Coaches Poll began ranking the Top-25 in the 1990 season the Aggies have appeared in the preseason poll 15 times.
Texas A&M is one of six SEC teams and one of two Texas teams in the preseason poll. The Aggies are scheduled to take on five teams in the preseason poll this season; No. 1 Clemson, No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia, No. 6 LSU and No. 16 Auburn.
The Coaches Poll powered by USA Today Sports is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of head coaches at FBS schools. The panel is chosen by random draw, conference by conference plus independents, from a pool of coaches who have indicated to the American Football Coaches Association their willingness to participate. Each coach submits a Top 25 with a first-place vote worth 25 points, second place 24, and so on down to one point for 25th.
Texas A&M opens 2019 against Texas State on August 29 at Kyle Field, a Thursday night contest set to be broadcast on SEC Network.
