Texas A&M Women’s Tennis Sweeps Season Opening Double Header

By  |

NEWPORT, Calif. – Texas A&M women’s tennis opened spring season with a double header sweep against Utah and Grand Canyon in Newport, California at the Palisades Tennis Club on Saturday. The Aggies did not drop a point in the matches topping the Utes 4-0 before besting the Antelopes 7-0.

“It was a great week for the Aggies, we had some excellent practices and we leave California 2-0,” Texas A&M women’s tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. “We couldn’t ask for more with how the matches played out. Now it’s time to get back to Aggieland and get the girls to the first day of classes on Monday. We will get back on the courts Tuesday to start preparing for the home-opener double header against Houston and UTSA next Satruday. We definitely gained some experience getting two matches under our belt and we will continue to improve with the way our group works in practice.”

Texas A&M travelled to California earlier this week to train in advance of the doubleheader hosted at the Palisades Tennis Club. Billy McQuaid, father of Texas A&M sophomore Riley McQuaid, is on staff at the club.

The Maroon & White raced out to an early advantage against Utah, securing the doubles point behind wins from Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makaravo on court one and Dorthea Faa-Hviding and McQuaid on court three. The season-opening victory was secured by straight set victories by McQuaid, Katya Townsend and No. 110 Goldsmith.

After a brief break the Aggies were back on the court against Grand Canyon. For the second straight match Texas A&M was staked to a 1-0 advantage after doubles action. All three doubles teams earned a victory, Goldsmith and Makaravo posted an impressive 6-0 win on court one followed by Townsend and Lucia Quitero’s 6-1 triumph on court two. After the point was determined, McQuaid and Faa-Hviding finished out the 6-1 win on court three.

In singles action, all six Aggies earned straight set wins. Townsend was the first off the court, winning 6-0, 6-2 on court two. Quitero earned her first collegiate win 6-3, 6-1 on court six followed by the match clinching win by Makarova on court three. McQuaid improved to 2-0 this spring with a 6-3, 6-0 victory followed by a 6-2, 6-4 win by Faa-Hviding on court five and 6-1, 6-4 win by Goldsmith on court one.

The Aggies improved to 10-3 all-time against Utah, winning each of the last five matchups, A&M picked up its first win against Grand Canyon in the first matchup between the two schools.
