NEWPORT, Calif. – Texas A&M women’s tennis opens its spring season with a double header against Utah and Grand Canyon in Newport, California at the Palisades Tennis Club on Saturday. The Aggies showdown against the Utes at 1:00 p.m. (CT) and oppose the Antelopes at 6:00 p.m. (CT).
“Coach Szabo and I are very excited to see our group in action,” Texas A&M women’s tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. “We have a very young, yet very strong roster this year. A couple of our girls had some unfortunate injuries in the fall, but they are bouncing back strongly. We are very fortunate to have added Lucia Quiterio this semester which will definitely strengthens our lineup from top to bottom in both the singles and the doubles.”
The Aggies return to dual match play coming off a 17-11 season a year ago after advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Maroon & White have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last 19 seasons and 24 times in program history.
“We have been out in California for a while now and the practices have been going extremely well and now it’s time to battle it out in the double header here at the Palisades Tennis Club on opening day,” Weaver added. “We have had great weather this week and we are delighted the way we have trained this week and we are looking forward to seeing the energy and intensity of the practices carry over into the actual dual matches.”
Texas A&M travelled to California earlier this week to train in advance of the doubleheader hosted at the Palisades Tennis Club. Billy McQuaid, father of Texas A&M sophomore Riley McQuaid, is on staff at the club that will host Saturday’s matches.
Texas A&M is 9-3 all-time against Utah, having won each of the last four matchups that occurred yearly from 1993-96, A&M and Grand Canyon have never faced off in women’s tennis.
