Texas A&M’s relay team captures bronze at US Nationals

STANFORD, California -- Texas A&M men’s and women’s swimming posted strong finishes on day one of the Phillips 66 National Championships on Wednesday at the Stanford Avery Aquatic Center. A total of 11 athletes competed in seven different events.

The Aggies took bronze in the men’s 4x100 freestyle relay with a time of 3:19.48 behind Australia (3:18.57) and Ohio State (3:18.44) who took first. Adam Koster led off the relay with a 49.95 split, followed by Mark Theall (48.78), Mike Thibert (50.51) and Clayton Bobo (50.24).

In the men’s 100m freestyle, five Aggies went head to head in the meet. Mark Theall finished 15th to make the B Final, touching the wall in 49.62. Theall was fifth in the B final and lowered his time to 49.39. Rising sophomore Shaine Casas also earned a spot in the finals, swimming in 49.75 to make the C Final. Casas had a standout swim to win the C Final in 49.17, while setting a new school record. Also competing in the men’s 100m freestyle were Adam Koster (50.19), Mike Thibert (50.64) and Clayton Bobo (51.13).

Taylor Pike and Camryn Toney competed in the women’s 200m butterfly. Pike reached the A final, touching the wall in 2:10.34. She finished eighth with a time of 2:10.68. Toney had one of her best times, finishing in 2:15.48. On the men’s side, Luke Stuart had one of his best times and finished 66th with a time of 2:03.57.

Raena Eldridge swam a 56.47 in the women’s 100m freestyle. A&M’s distance swimmers concluded action for the day. Joy Field clocked in at 8:38.73 to finish 20th and Felipe Rizzo was 31st with a time of 15:47.51.

After having a strong first day, Steven Richardson became Texas A&M’s newest Olympic Trials qualifier in the 100m freestyle with a time of 50.43.

The 2019 Phillips 66 National Championships continues on Thursday and will conclude Sunday, August 4 in Stanford, Calif.
