Police say a Bryan man tried to feed his drug habit by stealing a donation jar meant to feed hungry children.
Benjamin White, 33, is charged with theft for allegedly breaking in to the Lone Star Grocery in October and taking a "Feed The Children" donation jar containing about $5 in cash.
When store owners arrived the next day, they found the front doors had been pried open. A look at the overnight surveillance tape showed a man entering the store, grabbing the donation container and quickly leaving. The owners identified the suspect as a frequent customer.
Bryan police investigators found White in the Brazos County jail on another charge. During questioning, police say White told them he had been taking drugs throughout the day and remembered little about the incident. When detectives showed him the video, they say White admitted to stealing the donations.
