COLLEGE STATION - Ham Radio operators across the nation are hard at work practicing their skills, and they're having some friendly competition in the process.
It's called Amateur Radio Field day and Here in the Brazos Valley at Bachmann park, the Bryan/College Station Amateur Radio club is busy talking to as many people as they can across the globe and in outer space as they can.
Think of ham radio as the last line of defense when disasters like tornadoes or hurricanes make traditional communication methods impossible.
"The cell phones don't work, you don't have any power, the internet is down, but this radio system will still work for you," said Radio Operator Mike Wisby.
This once a year field day started at 1 p.m. Saturday and they'll be practicing and competing until 1 p.m. Sunday.
