Scott & White Healthcare broke ground Wednesday on a new hospital on Highway 6 and Rock Prairie Road in College Station.
The hospital will be a lower level trauma center with specialities like an emergency department, a comprehensive cancer center, neurosurgery and a neo-natal care unit for babies, as well as cardiac services. Scott & White says the new hospital will also pump millions into the local economy.
"We will add approximately 400 new jobs," said Jason Jennings, CEO of the Scott & White Hospital-College Station We will have salaries in excess of $40 million over a 5 year period."
The 143-bed hospital broke ground on the same land that was bought from Weingarten Realty Investors.
The property was at the center of a legal battle between Weingarten and the City of College Station. The total settlement forces the city of College Station to pay out $1.6 million to Weingarten Realty group. The lawsuit stemmed from a rejected proposal to build a Walmart Supercenter on the site.
