Rubato Elegy blends classical & soul on new neo-soul album Terraform
The Texas-based Filipino-Nigerian duo channels classical precision and soulful storytelling into their latest release
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Anne Renne Corpus and Pricilla Adejokun have been making music together since late 2018, when they met in college. What started in a small room with a piano eventually turned into a shared goal: forming a band they named Rubato Elegy.
The Texas-based duo bonded over their classical music training and has since shaped a sound rooted in those traditions while blending in modern soul influences. They describe their style as neo-soul.
Their name is a nod to both their musical foundation and their purpose.
“Rubato is a classical term used in sheet music,” Corpus said. “That means that the musician can take their own pace during a song or a piece.”
Adejokun said “elegy” completes the theme, describing it as “a term that describes a poem that is deeply reflective.”
The pair recently released their album, “Terraform,” a six-song project about the push and pull between creative ambition and financial stability.
“It has six songs on there, and it’s basically highlighting the journey of wanting to do something in the creative field — something a little bit more than yourself — while also craving the stability of a nine-to-five corporate job,” Adejokun said.
They hope listeners connect with the experience of pursuing art while still wrestling with fear of the unknown and questions about long-term stability.
“Terraform” is available on all streaming platforms. Fans can follow Rubato Elegy on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube at @Rubato_Elegy.
