Married teachers retire together after combined 58 years in education

GILBERT, Ariz. (KPNX) - For a husband-and-wife teaching duo with a combined 58 years in education, retirement came with hugs, happy tears and a cafeteria full of surprises.

For decades, Mark and Trinka Henderson have spent their days showing up for students at Gilbert Christian Schools’ Greenfield campus, but last Wednesday, the students, families and school staff showed up for them with a surprise retirement celebration.

The Hendersons thought they were heading to a staff meeting, but when they walked through the cafeteria doors, they were greeted with cheers from a crowd ready to celebrate two careers built on heart.

“I couldn’t believe how many people were here. I thought it was just going to be the staff,” Trinka Henderson said.

Trinka Henderson is retiring after 40 years of teaching. Known for encouraging and challenging her first-grade students, she said the classroom has always been her “happy place.”

“Because they give such unconditional love, I just love it,” she said in a 2019 interview. “I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

Her husband, Mark Henderson, taught middle school for 18 years, winning over students with humor, mentorship and his famous “snack shack” reward booth, where students could redeem earned coupons for treats.

Together, the couple became beloved figures on campus, even showing up for school plays and weekend sports.

“They’re a dynamic duo, and they teach with their heart,” room mom Angela Quartarone said. “They love their kids. They check on them if they’re sick or if they were absent. They really both go the extra mile.”

For the Hendersons, the best part of teaching was the relationships.

“I fall in love with my families,” Trinka Henderson said. “I have lifelong friends from the families that I’ve taught their kids, and you know, some of them are adults now. I’ve had kids of kids.”

“I just love the fact that she gets them as the first graders. I get them when they get to sixth grade, and we can watch them grow from there,” Mark Henderson said.

Although the couple are retiring from full-time teaching, they do not expect to slow down completely.

“No, we won’t sit still,” Trinka Henderson said. “We’re gonna stay busy.”

“I have a feeling she’s going to be doing something. I’ll probably be back on campus, subbing or helping out in some capacity,” Mark Henderson said.
