Unanswered Questions: family marks one year since officer-involved shooting in College Station

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) -Thursday marks the one-year anniversary since a 22-year-old lost his life in a confrontation with officers on Spring Loop in College Station. Police say they opened fire on the young man after he first fired a shotgun at them during an early morning search warrant executed at his home.

Last year a grand jury and the Texas Rangers cleared the officer who fired the fatal shot. However, there are still a lot of unanswered questions one year later, centering around what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting that claimed the life of Mark Hopkins.

In February of last year, a citywide operation targeted drug-related activities, leading to the execution of four warrants, including one at Mark Hopkins’ residence on Spring Loop. Court documents indicate that Abraham Escobar, identified as a ‘high-level drug dealer,’ was the primary focus of the police action. Although Hopkins was not the intended target, he lost his life after allegedly firing upon the officers when they forcibly entered the home.

The family remains uncertain about the circumstances preceding the shooting. While the police described the operation as a ‘knock and announce,’ in October, the family filed a petition against the city, seeking to compel the release of information and evidence, including unedited body camera footage.

The case remains sealed by a Brazos County judge, and our requests to view the body camera footage have been unsuccessful.

In a recent statement, the family emphasized their observance of the anniversary as a renewed commitment to seeking truth and justice.

Additionally, we’ve learned that Leslie Siddons, one of the suspects in the initial drug investigation, pleaded guilty to two charges of engaging in organized criminal activity and possession of marijuana (5lbs-50lbs), receiving a 5-year prison sentence. Meanwhile, her co-conspirators Scott Siddons, Abraham Escobar, and Michael Gentry still await resolution in the 272nd District Court of Brazos County.
