Texas A&M Regents confirm incoming system chancellor

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents confirmed current Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar as the System’s next chancellor.

The Board of Regents unanimously voted for Hegar, who will begin leading the system after Chancellor John Sharp retires on June 30. Sharp has held the chancellor role for almost 14 years.

Hegar, the state’s chief financial officer, graduated from Texas A&M in 1993, then earned a law degree from St. Mary’s University and a master’s degree in law from the University of Arkansas. He served in the Texas House of Representatives and Texas Senate before being elected comptroller in 2014. Hegar won re-election in 2018 and 2022.

Hegar was named the sole finalist for the position on March 7. Per state law, the board had to wait 21 days before finalizing its selection.

“I am grateful and honored that the Board of Regents have entrusted me with the responsibility of leading one of the greatest university systems in the nation,” Hegar said in a release sent to media. “Our core values unite us and set the Texas A&M System apart from the others, and I remain steadfastly committed to upholding and preserving those values.”

Neither the incoming chancellor nor current Chancellor John Sharp were in attendance at Friday’s Board of Regents meeting. Both were scheduled to represent the system at Prairie View A&M’s Student Support Services Facility groundbreaking on Friday morning.
