Sen. Mitch McConnell says he has been discharged from the hospital and is heading home

WASHINGTON (Gray News/AP) — U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell has been discharged from the hospital and is heading home, he said in a statement Thursday.

“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell wrote. “Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

He continued, “On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business.”

The Kentucky Republican and former Senate leader was first admitted to the hospital on June 14. He disclosed weeks later that his hospitalization was the result of a fall and said he was undergoing physical therapy.

McConnell did not give a specific date for his return to the Senate.

McConnell’s absence was felt in the Senate on Thursday as Republicans were unable to advance a farm bill out of committee without his vote.

Last week, Kentucky Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear urged McConnell to either prove that he is fit to continue serving in office or resign.
