BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - As we’ve been tracking WBGT all summer long with new UIL rules in effect, we’re expecting readings to reach the highest they have so far this season.

Wet Bulb Globe Temperatures (WBGT, or Heat Stress Index) could climb to “extreme” levels here in the Brazos Valley by or before the end of the week. The combination of heat, ample sunshine, humidity, and lack of a breeze could make WBGT the highest level we’ve seen so far this summer.

If the WBGT climbs above 92°, outdoor practices must be suspended until cooler weather occurs.

Refresher: WBGT and What It Means

Unlike the regular temperature on your phone, WBGT tries to capture the full picture of heat stress on the human body, in a way that’s more accurate than the heat index, or “feels like” temperature can.

Schools will now take WBGT readings within 15 minutes before practice starts to ensure they have the most accurate information. The same person will take readings whenever possible to maintain consistency.

Green Zone (Safer Conditions): Normal practice with standard hydration breaks.

Yellow Zone (Caution): Practice continues, but work-to-rest ratios change. Athletes get more frequent breaks for hydration and cooling. Some equipment may be removed to help with heat dissipation.

Orange Zone (Moderate): Practice continues, but work-to-rest ratios get another bump. Equipment may also be removed.

Red Zone (High Risk): Significant modifications to practice. More frequent breaks, shorter practice sessions, and mandatory cooling periods.

Black Zone (Extreme Conditions): Practice may be suspended entirely until conditions improve.
