Hometown Heroes Day returns to Bryan library

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Hometown Heroes Day returns to Clara B. Mounce Public Library this Saturday, giving children a chance to meet local firefighters, police officers and other first responders.

Event to feature fire trucks, police vehicles

Attendees can expect to see fire trucks, including a ladder truck, along with a police vehicle and a SWAT vehicle. Visitors can meet the officers and firefighters on scene.

Children will also be able to climb inside a trash truck and see a digger if one is brought to the event. A HealthPoint vehicle will be on site for people to walk through and tour.

Attendees can honk the fire truck’s horn and speak through the microphone in the police vehicles.

The free event is from 9 to 11 a.m. and allows people to come and go as they please.

Library to unveil 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program

At 10 a.m. that day, the library will unveil its 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program inside the building.

The Friends of the Library funded the library’s purchase of books for the program. The library created 100 backpacks, each containing 10 books selected by library staff.

Parents can check out a backpack of 10 books to read with their children at home. There is no set order for checking out backpacks. Once a family completes all 100 backpacks, they will have read 1,000 books with their child.

Families can drop off a completed backpack and check out another one.
