Brazos County finds Bryan mass shooting suspect competent to stand trial

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) - Nearly four years after a mass shooting at the Kent Moore Cabinets manufacturing facility in Bryan, the case against Larry Bollin is moving forward.

It was ruled Bollin is competent to stand trial in Brazos County for the attack at the cabinet-making company, and a trial date has been set for July 14.

In November 2023, the case against Bollin was delayed after he was declared mentally incompetent and sent to a state hospital for treatment. After months of evaluation medical professionals deemed Bollin mentally competent to stand trial for his alleged crimes in Bryan.

Shane Phelps, lead attorney of Shane Phelps Law, told KBTX even with a trial date set, this will still be a challenging case.

“I would expect that there’s going to be potential delays because that’s always a possibility,” Phelps said. However, “Knowing Judge [Kyle] Hawthorne the way I do... He’s going to make this case go to trial on the 14th of July.”

Bollin is accused of opening fire at his workplace in April 2021, killing one person and injuring several others.He was later arrested in Grimes County shortly after the shooting, where he is accused of shooting a state trooper before being taken into custody.

Bollin faces multiple charges in both counties.

Grimes County is now taking steps to determine whether he can stand trial in that jurisdiction. County officials have scheduled a status hearing for Wednesday to evaluate Bollin’s mental competency. This hearing will help determine whether he can move forward with a trial in Grimes County.

“I think that Grimes County is likely to fall in behind Brazos County and have him declared competent there so that he can stand trial there,“ added Phelps.

If found guilty, Phelps said Bollin could face life in prison.
